Oxidative stress, especially from UV exposure, plays a pivotal role in skin aging. UV rays in sunlight generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) and trigger inflammation, which gradually degrades collagen and elastin in the extracellular matrix, contributing to wrinkles and skin laxity.

Young cells are adept at repairing such damage, but as cells age they accumulate damage to their critical internal machinery and become less able to counteract ROS damage, a vicious cycle.

A 2017 clinical study demonstrated that oral astaxanthin (12 mg/day) maintained skin moisture, reduced wrinkle progression, stabilized IL-1α levels, and improved skin elasticity, supporting astaxanthin’s anti-inflammatory and protective effects on the skin. It also showed that astaxanthin protects cells against UVB by inhibiting inflammatory cytokines and matrix metalloprotease, a key enzyme that breaks down skin collagen and contributes to aging.

Another study in 2018 showed that astaxanthin reduces moisture loss in UV-irradiated skin and improves subjective skin conditions like roughness and texture in non-irradiated areas.

Studies combining astaxanthin with collagen hydrolysate yielded additive effects in enhancing elasticity and moisture, and in reducing enzymes that degrade collagen and elastin in the dermal skin layer.
